About the artist
Salvador Dalí (1904–1989), born in Figueres, Spain, was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and writer best known for his work in the Surrealist style. One of the most celebrated artists of the twentieth century, Dalí captivated audiences worldwide with his dreamlike imagery, virtuoso draftsmanship, and flamboyant public persona that blurred the boundaries between art and performance.
Dalí's artistic practice fused rigorous academic technique with fantastical, hallucinatory subject matter drawn from dreams and the subconscious. His paintings are characterized by precise, almost photographic rendering of melting objects, distorted figures, and impossible landscapes that destabilize rational perception. Working primarily in oil on canvas, he also produced sculpture and literary works, developing a distinctive visual vocabulary rooted in personal symbolism, Freudian psychoanalysis, and his deep attachment to his Catalonian heritage. His meticulous approach to painting reflected his admiration for Renaissance masters, while his subject matter plunged into the irrational depths explored by the Surrealist movement.
Dalí's first solo exhibition at Galeries Dalmau in Barcelona in 1925 marked his artistic breakthrough. Surrealist exhibitions in Paris between 1929 and 1938 established his international reputation and positioned him as a defining figure of the movement. A major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1941 elevated him to worldwide fame during his years in the United States. The grand retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1979 attracted enormous public attention and reaffirmed his enduring influence on twentieth-century art and visual culture.
