About the artist
Alexandre (Sacha) Stoppelman (1921–1997), born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, was a Dutch artist best known for his work in the School of Paris style. He trained at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam before moving to Paris around 1950, where he lived and worked for the remainder of his life.
Stoppelman's artistic practice is characterized by lyrical and expressionist compositions featuring stylized figures, animals, and scenes from Jewish life and the circus. He employed vigorous black contour lines combined with soft washes of color and gentle earth-toned palettes. His flattened perspective and bold outlines reflect the influence of post-war expressionism and artists such as Marc Chagall. The dreamlike, poetic quality of his work aligns him firmly with the mid-20th-century European figurative tradition.
Stoppelman's work was exhibited in solo shows at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1955 and 1960. His paintings and drawings are held in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Cobra Museum voor Moderne Kunst in Amstelveen. His association with the School of Paris positioned him within an important movement of émigré and international artists working in post-war France.
