About the artist
Jef Codron (1882–1942), born in Brussels, Belgium, was a Belgian painter, etcher, lithographer, and draughtsman best known for his work associated with Le Sillon and the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire de Bruxelles. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels under Herman Richir, Joseph Stallaert, and Isidore Verheyden. His artistic practice was shaped by the realist approach and attention to light characteristic of Le Sillon.
Codron worked across multiple disciplines, creating paintings, etchings, lithographs, and drawings. His subjects included portraits, figure compositions, landscapes, cityscapes, interiors, and still lifes. He developed a style that combined realist observation with a sensitivity to light and atmosphere. His technical skill in printmaking complemented his work as a painter, allowing him to explore similar themes across different media.
Codron's work is held in several public collections in Belgium. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels owns his painting "Het ontbijt" (Le Déjeuner), while the Museum of Ixelles in Brussels holds "De rode sjaal" (L'Écharpe rouge) in its collection. His association with Le Sillon and the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire de Bruxelles placed him within the active artistic community of early twentieth-century Brussels.
