About the artist
E. G. Hester (active in 19th century) was a British engraver active during the late nineteenth century. His name appears on a number of Victorian prints published in London, particularly aquatints and reproductive engravings after paintings by contemporary artists. Working during a period when printmaking played an important role in making artworks accessible to a wider public, Hester specialized in translating painted compositions into finely detailed engravings suitable for publication and distribution.
One recorded example of his work is A Pleasant Ride Home (1879), an aquatint hand-colored print after a painting by T. N. H. Walsh, published on 7 June 1879 by R. Dodson's Fine Art Gallery, 147 Strand, London. The print demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with Victorian reproductive engraving, combining precise line work with hand-applied color to recreate the atmosphere and detail of the original painting.
Although little is known about Hester's personal life, his surviving prints reflect the important role engravers played in the nineteenth-century art world, preserving and disseminating paintings through the medium of print. His work remains of interest to collectors of Victorian engravings, sporting art, and hand-colored aquatints.
