This striking work, Untitled (Temple), realised in gouache on photographic paper, presents a photograph of a temple in Pakistan, originally captured by celebrated photojournalist Maria Waseem, a Forbes award recipient. Waseem's photography practice is devoted to documenting the fragile remnants of Pakistan's pre-Partition heritage, capturing residential buildings, temples, gurdwaras, small mosques, and other structures that stand as quiet witnesses to a shared past. Ahmed, one of Pakistan's leading contemporary miniature artists, has transformed the photograph with intricate gouache detailing, creating a unique collaboration that bridges photography and miniature painting. Ahmed is a contemporary miniature artist who received his degree in Miniature Painting from the National College of Arts in Lahore in 2004. He has exhibited his work extensively across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. Working with gouache on wasli, traditional handmade paper, Ahmed's practice blends historical and contemporary themes. Unusually for Ahmed, this work departs from the neo-miniature paintings and watercolours for which he is widely known and celebrated, offering a rare glimpse of Ahmed's experimentation beyond his signature style. Here, the photographed ruined statue assumes a central role, almost becoming a miniature figure itself, evoking a subtle dialogue with what once was. Through this synthesis of historical imagery and cross-cultural visual references, Ahmed creates a work that quietly reflects on the passage of time, cultural memory, and the socio-political forces that shape it.
