Painted in 1965, Temple Wall reflects the powerful current of abstraction that defined much of mid-twentieth-century painting. Across Europe and North America in the post-war decades, artists increasingly rejected direct representation in favour of expressive surfaces, gestural mark-making, and psychologically charged colour fields. By the mid-1960s, abstraction had diversified into numerous parallel tendencies, from the gestural intensity associated with Abstract Expressionism to the raw, anti-academic visual language of Art Brut, championed by Jean Dubuffet. Temple Wall bears clear affinity with Dubuffet's aesthetic, particularly in its tactile surface and emphatic drawing. The composition is structured through a dense layering of blacks, greens, and earthen browns that evoke weathered stone or ritual architecture. Rather than presenting a literal depiction of a temple façade, the painting suggests the memory or residue of a sacred wall, an abstracted field in which line and colour accumulate like inscriptions or scars. The thickened passages of paint and irregular contours recall the material immediacy favoured by Dubuffet, whose work sought inspiration in graffiti, children's drawings, and other forms outside the academic tradition. Yet Patole's approach is not simply derivative. While Western abstraction of the 1950s and 1960s frequently emphasised spontaneity and painterly gesture, Temple Wall integrates these impulses with a more contemplative spatial order. The restrained palette, dominated by sombre blacks and organic greens anchors the composition in a sense of earthiness and permanence, suggesting the physical and symbolic weight of architectural surfaces worn by time. In this way, Patole merges the expressive freedoms of contemporary abstraction with a thematic resonance drawn from the idea of sacred space. Lemuel R. (Anand) Patole was a painter, musician, and writer who settled in New York City. He first studied painting at the Acharekar Academy of Fine Arts in Mumbai and subsequently received a scholarship to continue his studies at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Patole developed an artistic practice that blended Western modernist abstraction with spiritual and cultural themes drawn from both Hindu and Christian traditions. Alongside painting, he was also an accomplished tabla player and writer, viewing art, music, and spirituality as interconnected paths that shaped his creative philosophy.
