Born in 1932 in a village in the Yavatmal district of Maharashtra, Keote graduated in Fine Art from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 1956. He was later awarded a United Nations Fellowship, which enabled him to study at the Philadelphia College of Art, USA, from 1965 to 1966. The artist used this opportunity to travel extensively across the United States and Europe. His works are held in several important public and private collections, including the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; Air India, Mumbai; among others. Dated 1968, Untitled (Abstract) was executed shortly after the artist's return to India. Rendered in oil with incised detailing on a wood panel, the work exemplifies a distinctly Indian modernist sensibility. It's warm terracotta and muted beige palette evokes an earthy, indigenous aesthetic, while the incised surface recalls traditional Indian carving practices. This work draws from vernacular and tribal forms, reflecting a wider interest in identity and material in post-independence Indian art.
