Kamdev is ready to strike with his floral arrow, a mischievous smile on his cherubic face. His green wings are a nod to his vāhan or vehicle- the Indian parakeet. He is Cupid's Indian counterpart and played a significant role in the love story of Shiva and Parvati. This painting is the first of a larger series in which the artist explores Eros, the fundamental, primordial life force and ultimate driver of human creativity. Desire is not the root of all suffering but is the spark that creates life and everything that makes it worth living. It is the energy that enables us to transform intangible ideas into material reality. By depicting Kamdev in the form of a chubby toddler, the artist brings attention to a connection with Putti, derived from Greco-Roman art representing Eros, profane love, and household spirits, as well as with Cupid, a specific type of Putto associated with Venus and Romantic love. During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the classical Putto was repurposed to represent holy innocence and the divine omnipresence around the Madonna and Child, merging the form of a putto with the spiritual label of a cherub. A common thread that runs through all of the artists work is a search for connection between civilisations, and an attempt to bridge past and present. She gives tangible form to ancient ideas, spirits and archetypes in an effort to breathe new life into them and keep them alive. Kapoor studied at the Angel Academy of Art, an Atelier style school in Florence, Italy. She trained in traditional artistic techniques passed down from the Renaissance, through the 19th century academies of Europe. Her classical training has provided a solid foundation of skill and technique that has enabled Sakshi to bring her ideas and aesthetic ideals to life. She lives and works in her hometown, Bombay, where her practice comprises a combination of plein air painting that captures heritage buildings and streets of Bombay, as well as creating elaborate figurative compositions of gods and goddesses.
