Dorothy Newsome was a British illustrator who studied book illustration at the Birmingham School of Art. She went on to work in book and magazine illustration and became particularly known for her travel illustrations and posters of India. In the late 1920s, she travelled to India on commission from Oxford University Press, producing a series of drawings. While there, she was also commissioned by the Indian State Railways to design tourism posters, for which her vibrant and distinctive style is especially recognised. The present illustration depicts an Indian woman with two children, seemingly collecting water from a nearby pond. She carries one child while smiling affectionately at her other child, who is captivated by their reflection in the water. This tender interaction introduces a sense of universal maternal affection within an otherwise exoticised setting. Newsome use of flat planes of colour, with bold blocks of warm ochres and deep greens, creates a vibrant, graphic quality that evokes the heat and mystery of the Indian landscape. This can be understood as theatrical exoticism, prioritising mood, atmosphere, and escapism over cultural accuracy. Yet the mother's affectionate smile and the child's sense of wonder, rendered in delicate pencil and ink, create a familiar and universal emotional connection, balancing the exoticism of the setting with an intimate moment of everyday tenderness.
