Krishnamachari is a painter and curator based in Mumbai, where he has lived and worked since 1985. He completed a BFA at the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai (1991), and an MFA at Goldsmiths, University of London (2000), and is a founding member and President of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, established in 2012. His early engagement with photography, leading to his expulsion from Sir J.J. School of Art in 1992 after advocating for a dedicated studio, reflects a practice shaped by experimentation across mediums and a sustained interest in viewer engagement. The present lot, Self and Other, is a triptych in graphite on kent paper exploring themes of duality and mirroring, twins, divided selves, two sides of the same whole, and the relationship between self and other. The composition evokes a visual dialogue between identities and incorporates a reproduction of Alighiero Boetti's Gemelli (Twins) photography, reinforcing ideas of duality, being at once the same and different, while also reflecting the artist's interest in referencing popular culture.
