Title: Crash and Wreck Mail 1908 (June 13) Description: Cover from Paramaribo, Suriname, to Tasmania franked 12 1/2c, waterdamaged, handstamped "DAMAGED IN SHIPWRECK "AEON"' with a Launceston backstamp (Oct. 12). The S.S. "Aeon", en route from San Francisco to Sydney, was wrecked on Christmas Island on July 18th. The crew and passengers spent three months on the uninhabited island, finally being rescued on Sept. 22nd by the "Manuka" after the captain and three offices of the "Aeon" reached Fanning Island in one of the ships lifeboats. This straight line cachet used at Launceston on mail to Tasmania, one of just three covers recorded by Hoggarth and Gwynn.
