Title: Crash & Wreck 1858 (Feb 9) Description: Envelope (faulty and with stamps missing) with contents from Catcutta to Brixton, Surrey, England, showing on reverse an almost complete strike of the uncommon "Saved from the wreck/(of the) Ava." scriptive cachet and two impressions of the "BRIXTON/crown/--R" wax seals. Boxed "INDIA/PAID" and London Paid c.d.s. (11 May) in red on obverse and scarce blue "BXN" handstamp. This cover is the first one recorded "via Marseille" and although so marked it actually travelled from Suez via Southampton on the P & O Colombo (itself wrecked only 3 years later) on 10 May. Some of the mail to receive the cachet arrived in London on 18 April; mail arriving on subsequent vessels had been held back as more severely damaged, amply illustrated by this example. A most interesting item. Condition: Used Delivery option: Collection & Delivery Location: W1D Category: Collectables
