He learned literati painting from Ko Kaho / Jiang Jiapu of the Qing Dynasty (China) who came to Japan. He excelled in Sansui landscape and flower-and-bird paintings, and is called one of the three great literati painters in Nagasaki, along with Tetsuo Somon (1791-1872) and Miura Gomon (1808-1860). Itsuun was a fast painter and the opposite of Tetsuo who was a slow painter. He interacted with literati such as Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835) and Rai Sanyo (1781-1832). He was a great admirer of Tokisho / Dong Qichang (1555-1636), a southern painter of the late Ming Dynasty.
