Casey Age 20 years, Enlisted May 2, 1898, at New York city to serve two years; mustered in as a private, Co. L, May 10, 1898; appointed lance corporal, October 1, 1898; mustered out with company, November 15, 1898, at New York city.  Later hw would be on the 1908 Olympic team. At the 1908 Summer Olympics, the United States won the gold medal in the Men's Team Military Rifle event held at the Bisley rifle range. The team consisted of six shooters: Charles Benedict, Kellogg Casey, Ivan Eastman, William Leushner, William Martin, and Charles Winder.Who was Kellogg Kennon Venable Casey? K.K.V. Casey, as he is better known, was a marksman of great distinction and an innovator of the sport of target shooting. In the formative years of U.S. marksmanship, Casey was a leader and innovator. He served in several state militias prior to the formation of the National Guard in 1913. In each state he served, he was selected as a member of the state's rifle team. Not only did he show his prowess in marksmanship, but he was known to assist and instruct other team members. He was also selected to represent the United States in the International Long Range Marksmanship Competition for the Palma Trophy. His selection on five occasions (1902, 1903, 1907, 1912, and 1913), is a record that would stand until the 1970s.PATH TO MARKSMAN:Casey was born on September 17, 1877, in New York City to a schoolteacher and a homemaker. He grew up in the city with his sister, Fanny, and parents. At the age of 20, he embarked on the first of many adventures when he enlisted on May 2,1898, as a private in Company B, 71st New York Infantry. The regiment mustered into Federal service on May 10, 1898, and was designated the 71st Regiment Infantry, New York Volunteers. Three days later, the regiment embarked on transports for Florida. After numerous stops in Florida, it boarded boats for the two week voyage to Cuba. They arrived ashore at Siboney, Cuba, on June 23,1898. From June 24 to the 30th, the regiment supported. the 1st United States Volunteers (Roosevelt's Rough Riders) as well as several other regiments in the advance on the fortifications of Santiago. The regiment participated in the charge on San Juan Hill and the surrounding system of blockhouses. The 71st continued in siege duty until the Spanish surrendered July 14. The war ended on August 2, and by August 22, the 71st had returned to New York where many men were allowed to go on furlough, Casey among them. He mustered out as a Lance Corporal on November 15 with the rest of the regiment. For his service in the Spanish American War, Casey was issued the federal Spanish Campaign Medal (No. 6692). In addition, he was eligible for the Federal Cuban Occupation Medal and the New York State Medal for service in the Spanish American War Undoubtedly, Casey's interest in marksmanship began during his military service and remained with him until his death. It may have been his love of shooting or his enjoyment of the military that resulted in his re-enlistment in his old regiment, the 71st New York, in 1901. He was made corporal on May 10th of that year and in December 1902, he was appointed First Lieutenant, as Assistant Inspector of Small Arms Practice for the regiment. He excelled at marksmanship while with the regiment. He earned a spot on the New York State Rifle Team in 1901, 1902, 1903, and 1904. In addition, he was selected as a representative of the United States International Palma Team in 1902 and 1903. The Palma Team is selected from the best long range marksmen in the country. During his years with the 71st Regiment, Casey won a number of rifle competitions, including the following: The Wimbledon Cup (1902) (presented to the winner of the 1,000 yard long range match) The President's Match (1903) (presented to the top 100 shooters at the National Matches. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company In July of 1906, he accepted a commission as a Second Lieutenant with 1st Delaware Infantry. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in January 1907, and to Captain in June of the same Vear Casey attended the National Matches in Ohio in 1907, and won the prestigious Wimbledon Cup. In addition, he placed third in the All Comers Long Range Aggregate and third in the (NRA) Life Members Match. Later that year, Casey was again as the Team to be hosted in Canada. In 1908, Casey was selected as a member of the Delaware State Tean and again travelled to Ohio for the National Matches. For the third tune in his shooting career, he won the Wimbledon Cup, a significant feat at the time. He also was the winner of the Leech Cup, and placed second in the (NRA) Life Members Match. However, his most significant accomplishment in 1908 was his selection to the United States Olympic Team. At the Olympic games held in England, Casey won a gold medal in the Team Military Rifle event and a silver medal in the 1000 Vard Free Rifle event.With the end of the 1908 shooting season, Casey made the decision to resign his commission with the Delaware National Guard in November. He and his wife moved to Pennsylvania. Casey wasted no time securing a position with the Pennsylvania National Guard, however. He was made a Captain with the 2nd Infantry on January 19,1909, His marksmanship prowess was most likely the reason he was appointed as the Regimental Inspector of Rifle Practice In February, Casey's wife Claudia May gave birth to their only child, John Joseph Casey While in the Pennsylvania National Guard, Casey spent much of his time focused on his family and the Pennsylvania State Rifle Matches. In 1909, the First Brigade Rifle team (of which Casey was a member) won the Brigade Match and the Long Range Match. The team repeated the feat in 1910 and 1911. Although involved in the Pennsylvania matches, Cascy spent a great deal of time encouraging marksmanship training in the Philadelphia schools. He was instrumental in organizing the Inter Scholastic Rifle Shooting League and was greatly involved in the Boy Scout's marksmanship program. During this time he also enjoyed a promotion at E.I. du Pont de Nemours Powder Company where he became the individual in charge of the rifle smokeless division. At the 1914 National Matches, Casey won the NRA Individual Divisional Championship, Division A and the Officers and Inspectors Match. Little information could be located concerning Casey's involvement at the National Matches post 1915, other than he was an active observer. In June 1916. The President of the United States issued an Emergency Call due to the crisis on the Mexican Border. Casey, now a Major, was called to active duty with the Pennsylvania National Guard and served on the border with Headquarters Company of the 2nd Infantry. For his service on the border, he was issued the Federal Mexican Border Service Medal (#18078) and the State of Pennsylvania Mexican Border Service Medal (#5159). Casey was discharged from the Pennsylvania National Guard on September 30, 1916. He was accepted into the U.S. Service on the same date, but did not serve on active duty with the federal forces at any time prior to his commission expiring on June 22, 1921. He continued his work at du Pont, listing his employment on his WWI draft registration as "Assistant to the Vice President." Throughout WWI, his work at du Pont was essential. In 1921, he was appointed the company's Director of Military Sales In 1923, Kellogg Casey and a number of individuals also listed as "civilian" on War Department Document No. 9a were designated as Distinguished Marksman based upon their previous marksmanship records. Although listed as a civilian, notations on the document indicate that Casey had been a first lieutenant in the New York National Guard.  In 1924 and 1925, there was an effort made to revive the Palma Trophy Team Matches. They had been stagnant since 1913. Casey was selected to be team captain for the United States Palma Team in 1924, even though the Palma Trophy was not in contention. The only participants were the United States and Canada. These matches would become known as "the Palmer Matches" and would be the precursor to the standard Palma. Matches in 1928, As was customary, gifts were exchanged, and the Canadians presented Casey with a rim engraved bronze medallion commemorating the event. In return, Casey presented the Canadian team with a silver plated loving cup engraved for the occasion. The cup now resides in The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada Regimental Museum and Archives. Casey was a Director of the National Rifle Association and a member of the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice. These memberships and his employment with du Pont continued until the end of his life. He was a member of the Society of the Army of Santiago and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He also was a lover of music and helped encourage the merger of the Wilmington Symphony Club and the orchestra of the Wilmington Music School into the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra in 1930. Casey had played the bassoon in the Music School Orchestra for a number of years, which only added to the many facets of his personality. At the 1938 National Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio, Casey attended the meeting of the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice, in spite of suffering from a severe infection emanating from an ingrown toenail. When he returned home to Wilmington he was hospitalized where it was found necessary to amputate his leg just below the knee. Though he appeared to rally, the infection had spread too far. The soldier and marksman died on October 18, 1938.
