Carreau de revêtement en céramique peinte sous glaçure, Damas, Syrie, XVIIème siècle A Damascus underglaze-painted pottery tile Syria, 17th Century of square form, decorated in cobalt-blue, manganese and turquoise with black outline on a white ground with a foliate lobed cartouche containing split palmettes, partial rosettes to corners 28 x 28 cm. Footnotes: Provenance Private Italian collection, gifted to the vendor's father by Count Paolo Gerli (d. 1966) in the 1960s. Formerly in the collection at the Villa Trotti, Bellagio, possibly acquired by Lodovico Trotti Bentivoglio (1829-1914) on his travels to Damascus in the 19th Century. Villa Trotti at Bellagio was the residence of Count Lodovico Trotti Bentivoglio, who transformed the villa and its gardens in the late 19th Century, incorporating elements inspired by his travels in the East. In 1941 the property was acquired by Count Paolo Gerli di Villa Gaeta (d. 1966), the Milanese industrialist, collector and patron, who preserved and augmented its notable collections. The present tile is said to have formed part of the furnishings of Villa Trotti and may have been acquired by Trotti Bentivoglio on his travels to Syria.
