Henry Billings Brown (1836-1913) served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1891 to 1906 following his appointment by President Benjamin Harrison. He is best known for authoring the majority opinion in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), which upheld racial segregation under the "separate but equal" doctrine. Brown retired from the Court in 1906 after a distinguished judicial career that included service on the federal bench and as a justice of the nation's highest court.
