Hugo Lafayette Black (1886-1971) was an American lawyer, politician, and Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Before joining the Court, he served as a U.S. Senator from Alabama. During his more than three decades on the Supreme Court, Black became known for his strong textual interpretation of the Constitution and his influential opinions involving civil liberties, freedom of speech, religious liberty, and the incorporation of the Bill of Rights against the states. His tenure spanned the Stone, Vinson, and Warren Courts, making him one of the most consequential justices of the twentieth century.
