Roosevelt in 1937, he served for 34 years, making him one of the longest-serving justices in the Court's history. Black became one of the twentieth century's most influential jurists, known for his strong textual interpretation of the Constitution and his landmark opinions involving freedom of speech, religious liberty, criminal procedure, and the application of the Bill of Rights to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment.
