Elie Wiesel signed Carl Sandburg First Day Cover commemorating the centennial of the American poet's birth, featuring a 13-cent Carl Sandburg stamp canceled in Galesburg, Illinois, on January 6, 1978, the first day of issue. Wiesel has signed the cover prominently in blue ink.

Elie Wiesel (1928–2016) was a Romanian-born Jewish writer, Holocaust survivor, and human rights advocate whose memoir *Night* became one of the most influential firsthand accounts of the Holocaust. After surviving Auschwitz and Buchenwald, Wiesel dedicated his life to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and speaking out against genocide, persecution, and injustice around the world.
