Czesław Miłosz (1911-2004) was a Polish-American poet, essayist, translator, and diplomat widely regarded as one of the twentieth century's greatest literary figures. Awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in Literature, Miłosz explored themes of history, morality, exile, and totalitarianism through a body of work that profoundly influenced modern poetry. He spent much of his later career teaching at the University of California, Berkeley, and remains one of the most celebrated poets of the modern era.
