John Major autographed First Day Cover honoring American philosopher John Dewey, signed boldly in black ink across the center. The cover bears a block of four 30-cent John Dewey commemorative stamps canceled in Burlington, Vermont, on October 21, the official first day of issue.

Sir John Major (born 1943) served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1990 to 1997, succeeding Margaret Thatcher. During his tenure he oversaw Britain's participation in the Gulf War coalition, negotiated the Maastricht Treaty that established the European Union, and played a significant role in advancing the Northern Ireland peace process that culminated in the Good Friday Agreement.
