Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor, and Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, autographed 5.5 x 3.5” slip on cream stationery bearing the Duke’s crowned cipher at the head. Signed boldly “Edward” with the added inscription “Duke of Windsor” beneath the signature, alongside the signature of “Wallis Windsor.” A clean, elegant example of the famous royal couple’s post-abdication signatures on the Duke’s personal monogrammed stationery.

Edward VIII (1894–1972) ascended the British throne on January 20, 1936, following the death of his father, King George V. Less than a year later, he abdicated the throne in order to marry the twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson, creating one of the greatest constitutional crises in British history. Upon his abdication on December 11, 1936, he was created Duke of Windsor by his brother, King George VI, and spent the remainder of his life using that title. Edward and Wallis married in France in 1937 and lived much of their lives abroad, becoming one of the twentieth century’s most famous royal couples. Because he reigned for only 326 days, Edward remains the only British monarch to voluntarily abdicate the throne, making his autographs highly desirable among collectors of British royalty and modern history.

Wallis Simpson (1896–1986) was the American divorcée whose relationship with Edward VIII prompted his historic abdication. Created Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Windsor following their marriage, she remained at Edward’s side for the rest of his life. Their romance fundamentally altered the course of the British monarchy, paving the way for King George VI and, ultimately, the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The signatures of Edward and Wallis are among the most sought-after in modern royal history, representing one of the twentieth century’s most consequential love stories.
