Chaim Herzog (1918–1997) served as the sixth President of Israel from 1983 to 1993. Before his presidency, he was a decorated military officer, Director of Israeli Military Intelligence, Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, and a member of the Knesset. Herzog became internationally recognized for his passionate defense of Israel, most notably his 1975 speech before the United Nations condemning the resolution equating Zionism with racism. His memoir provides a firsthand account of many of the defining events in the history of the modern State of Israel.
