James D. Watson (1928– ) is an American molecular biologist, geneticist, and Nobel Prize recipient best known for co-discovering the double-helix structure of DNA with Francis Crick in 1953, work that fundamentally transformed modern biology and medicine. Watson, Crick, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids. His scientific achievements remain among the most important advances in twentieth-century science, although his later public career was marked by controversial statements that drew widespread criticism.
