Sir Edmund Hillary (1919–2008) was the New Zealand mountaineer who, alongside Tenzing Norgay, became the first person to successfully reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. The achievement remains one of the greatest milestones in the history of exploration. Beyond his climbing accomplishments, Hillary devoted much of his life to humanitarian work in Nepal, founding the Himalayan Trust and helping build schools, hospitals, bridges, and airfields for Sherpa communities.
