The ArtCraft cachet commemorates Vasco da Gama's historic voyage to India and bears an 8-cent United Nations stamped envelope with a first day cancellation from United Nations Headquarters in New York dated January 12, 1973.

Sir Edmund Hillary (1919–2008) was the New Zealand mountaineer who, together with Tenzing Norgay, became the first confirmed climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. Beyond his historic ascent, Hillary devoted much of his life to humanitarian work in Nepal, helping build schools, hospitals, bridges, and airfields through the Himalayan Trust. He remains one of the most celebrated explorers and adventurers of the twentieth century.
