A.W. Greeley signed typed letter on official Office of the Chief Signal Officer letterhead, Washington, D.C., dated September 11, 1889. Addressed to Rev. F. E. Clark of Pine Point, Maine, Greeley politely declines a request to write articles for The Golden Rule, writing, "It would be impossible for me to write articles for the 'Golden Rule,' as requested in your letter of September 2nd." The letter is signed boldly in black ink at the conclusion.
Expected age toning, scattered foxing, and original mailing folds. Otherwise good condition.
Adolphus Washington Greeley (1844-1935) was a United States Army officer, Arctic explorer, and scientist best known for leading the ill-fated Lady Franklin Bay Expedition, one of the most significant expeditions of the Heroic Age of Arctic exploration. A Civil War veteran who later served as Chief Signal Officer of the U.S. Army, Greeley played a pivotal role in advancing military communications and polar science. In recognition of his extraordinary lifetime of military, scientific, and public service, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1935.
