Saburo Sakai autographed Official First Day Cover honoring the Golden Jubilee of Commercial Aviation, signed in both English and Japanese. The cachet features World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker as part of the "American Pioneer of Flight" series. The cover bears a 13-cent Commercial Aviation commemorative stamp canceled in Chicago, Illinois, on March 19, 1976, the official first day of issue.

Saburo Sakai (1916-2000) was one of Imperial Japan's most accomplished fighter pilots during World War II, credited with more than 60 aerial victories. Serving with the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service, he became renowned for his flying skill and remarkable endurance, famously surviving a grievous head wound suffered in combat before returning to base. Following the war, Sakai became an advocate for peace and remained one of the most recognized Japanese aviators of the twentieth century.
