Lindberg (1920-2007) was a United States Marine Corps combat veteran best known as one of the Marines who raised the first American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. The initial flag raising boosted morale across the battlefield before a larger replacement flag was raised later that day, an event immortalized in Joe Rosenthal's iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph. Lindberg later became one of the foremost eyewitnesses preserving the history of the first flag raising and remained an active speaker and advocate for Marine Corps history throughout his life.
