Joe Foss inscribed and autographed Brookman Limited Edition First Day Cover commemorating the Northrop Alpha from the Classic American Aircraft series, signing "Joe Foss VMF-121 USMCR" in bold black ink. The cover bears a 32-cent Northrop Alpha commemorative stamp canceled in Dayton, Ohio, on July 19, 1997, the official first day of issue.

Joe Foss (1915–2003) was a United States Marine Corps fighter ace who earned the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II, where he was credited with destroying 26 enemy aircraft. After the war he served as Governor of South Dakota, the first commissioner of the American Football League, and later became president of the National Rifle Association. His inscription references Marine Fighting Squadron 121 (VMF-121) and his service in the United States Marine Corps Reserve.
