Eugene B. Fluckey (1913-2007) was one of the most decorated submarine commanders in United States naval history. As commanding officer of the USS *Barb* during World War II, he pioneered aggressive submarine tactics that resulted in the destruction of numerous Japanese ships and military targets. In one of the war's most daring operations, Fluckey led a landing party ashore that successfully demolished a Japanese train, the only American ground attack conducted on the Japanese home islands during the conflict. For his extraordinary heroism, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, in addition to an unprecedented four Navy Crosses. His remarkable wartime career was later chronicled in his bestselling memoir *Thunder Below!*, widely regarded as one of the finest submarine accounts of World War II.
