General James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle (1896-1993) was one of the most celebrated aviators in American history and a pioneering military pilot whose achievements transformed aviation. During World War II, he planned and led the famed Doolittle Raid on Tokyo on April 18, 1942, the first American air attack on the Japanese home islands following Pearl Harbor. Awarded the Medal of Honor for the mission, Doolittle also commanded the Twelfth, Fifteenth, and Eighth Air Forces in Europe, helping direct the Allied strategic bombing campaign. He remains one of the most influential figures in both military and civilian aviation history.
