Benjamin O. Davis Jr. signed and warmly inscribed this copy of his autobiography, American, on the title page: "To: Major General Jack E. Thomas, With fond memories of a long-ago association, Ben Davis." The memoir recounts the remarkable life and military career of the pioneering aviator who led the famed Tuskegee Airmen and became the first African American general in the United States Air Force.
Near fine condition. The dust jacket and hardcover show only light expected handling wear. The inscription and signature are bold and well preserved.
General Benjamin O. Davis Jr. (1912–2002) was a trailblazing military leader who commanded the legendary 332nd Fighter Group, the Tuskegee Airmen, during World War II. Despite enduring racial discrimination throughout his career, Davis became the first African American general in the U.S. Air Force and helped pave the way for the integration of the American armed forces. He received numerous honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998 in recognition of his extraordinary service to the nation.
