Gen. Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager (1923-2020) was one of the greatest test pilots in aviation history. On October 14, 1947, flying the Bell X-1 rocket plane, he became the first person to officially exceed the speed of sound in level flight, a milestone that forever changed aerospace engineering. A decorated World War II fighter ace with 11½ aerial victories, Yeager later tested numerous experimental aircraft and became an enduring symbol of American aviation, courage, and technological achievement.
