Morrison Remick Waite (1816-1888) was an American lawyer and the seventh Chief Justice of the United States. Appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1874, Waite presided over the Supreme Court during the Reconstruction era and the nation's rapid industrial expansion. His Court decided several landmark constitutional cases involving civil rights, federal authority, and the regulation of commerce, including United States v. Cruikshank and Munn v. Illinois. Waite served as Chief Justice until his death in 1888, helping shape constitutional law during one of the most consequential periods in American history.
