George Sutherland autographed typed letter signed (TLS) on Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, dated September 23, 1937. The 5.75 x 7" letter is addressed to Robert Whittemore of Union, New York, replying that Sutherland is unable to fulfill a request for a photograph because his supply has been exhausted. Signed in black ink, "Geo. Sutherland."
Fine condition with light expected age toning and handling wear.
George Sutherland (1862-1942) served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1922 to 1938 following his appointment by President Warren G. Harding. A member of the influential "Four Horsemen" bloc, Sutherland was a leading advocate of judicial restraint and limited federal power during the Lochner era. Prior to his service on the Court, he represented Utah in the United States Senate and was a prominent constitutional lawyer.
