Harlan Fiske Stone (1872-1946) served as Chief Justice of the United States from 1941 until his death in 1946 after previously serving as an Associate Justice and Attorney General of the United States. Appointed Chief Justice by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Stone presided over the Supreme Court during much of World War II and is remembered for his influential opinions on constitutional law and the expansion of federal authority.
