John Paul Stevens (1920-2019) served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1975 until his retirement in 2010. Appointed by President Gerald Ford, Stevens became known for his thoughtful, independent judicial philosophy and played a significant role in many of the Court's most consequential decisions over more than three decades. At the time of his retirement, he was the second longest-serving Justice in the Court's history and its senior Associate Justice.
