George Shiras Jr. (1832-1924) was an American lawyer and Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. A successful Pittsburgh attorney before joining the bench, Shiras was appointed by President Benjamin Harrison in 1892 despite having no prior judicial experience. During his tenure, he participated in several landmark decisions of the late nineteenth century, including Pollock v. Farmers' Loan & Trust Co., which invalidated the federal income tax, and Plessy v. Ferguson, which upheld racial segregation under the "separate but equal" doctrine. Shiras retired from the Court in 1903 after more than a decade of service.
