Owen Josephus Roberts (1875-1955) was an American lawyer and Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Appointed by President Herbert Hoover in 1930, Roberts played a pivotal role during the constitutional controversies of the New Deal era. He is best remembered for the 1937 decision in West Coast Hotel Co. v. Parrish, in which his vote upheld a Washington state minimum wage law, a shift often referred to as "the switch in time that saved nine." Following his retirement from the Court in 1945, Roberts chaired the commission that investigated the attack on Pearl Harbor. His judicial career spanned one of the most transformative periods in American constitutional history.
