The cachet bears the 3-cent Harlan Fiske Stone commemorative stamp canceled in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, on August 25, 1948, the official first day of issue.

William H. Rehnquist (1924-2005) served as Chief Justice of the United States from 1986 until his death in 2005 after being elevated by President Ronald Reagan from his position as Associate Justice, to which he had been appointed by President Richard Nixon in 1972. During his tenure as Chief Justice, Rehnquist presided over the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton and became known for his influential opinions on federalism, states' rights, and constitutional law.
