Frank Murphy (1890-1949) served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1940 until his death in 1949 after being appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Earlier in his career he served as Governor of Michigan, Mayor of Detroit, and U.S. Attorney General. Murphy is remembered for his strong defense of civil liberties and for being the first Supreme Court Justice to use the term "racism" in a judicial opinion.
