Anthony McLeod Kennedy (born 1936) is an American lawyer and retired Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, Kennedy became one of the Court's pivotal swing votes for nearly three decades. He authored landmark opinions in cases involving free speech, federalism, campaign finance, and LGBTQ rights, including Obergefell v. Hodges, which established a constitutional right to same-sex marriage. Kennedy retired from the Court in 2018 after more than 30 years of service.
