Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948) served as the 11th Chief Justice of the United States from 1930 to 1941 after previously serving as an Associate Justice, Governor of New York, U.S. Secretary of State, and Republican presidential nominee in 1916. One of the few individuals to serve on the Supreme Court in both Associate and Chief Justice roles, Hughes guided the Court through the constitutional challenges of the New Deal era.
