Abe Fortas (1910-1982) served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1965 to 1969 after being appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. A close presidential adviser before joining the Court, Fortas resigned in 1969 amid ethical controversy, becoming the first sitting Supreme Court Justice to resign under such circumstances in the twentieth century.
