Strawalde, actually Jürgen Böttcher, studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden from 1949 to 1953 and direction at the University of Film and Television, Potsdam, from 1955 to 1960. He was one of the most important oppositional painters and filmmakers of the GDR and gained international recognition after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
