The German painter, graphic artist, and sculptor studied in Hamburg from 1947 to 1951 and worked as a printer for Oskar Kokoschka and Emil Nolde from 1955. Between 1960 and 1963, he lived and worked in Paris, and from 1963 to 1986, he held a professorship at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Hamburg (University of Fine Arts Hamburg). In 1981, he became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
