Lagneau' signed by the President and Secretary, circular, framed, 73mm. diameter, 'l'an 1er de l'Egalite 1792' (collection) Footnotes: 'WE WERE FORCED, TOWARDS EVENING, TO RETREAT, WHICH DID NOT TAKE PLACE WITHOUT DISORDER': THE PAPERS AND MEDALS OF LOUIS-VIVANT LAGNEAU, SURGEON MAJOR OF NAPOLEON'S GRANDE ARMÉE, including an eye-witness account of Waterloo from the perspective of the vanquished. Dr Louis-Vivant Lagneau (1781-1867) of Chalon-sur-Saône, had embarked on a promising career in medicine in Paris when he was conscripted into Napoleon's army in 1803, and he went on to serve in various regiments until 1815. As our manuscript accounts show, he travelled widely throughout Europe and took part in over twenty campaigns, including in the Peninsular, and many battles including Talavera. After a brief return to Paris in 1812, he joined the Grande Armée in Moscow and took part in the retreat to Paris. In 1814, at Napoleon's capitulation, ever faithful to the Emperor, he left the army as he refused to serve the Bourbons, but rejoined on Napoleon's return from Elba during the Hundred Days. In March 1815 he was promoted to surgeon-major of the 3rd regiment of foot grenadiers of the Old Guard and was present at Waterloo. His account of the Napoleonic campaigns, Journal d'un chirgugien de la Grande Armée, was published in 1913, and our detailed manuscript appears to be his first comprehensive draft, with significant portions of text lacking or altered in the published version. In it he describes his military career in great detail and, notably, his presence at Quatre Bras and Waterloo, where he blames the French defeat on the failure of Marshal Grouchy to delay the Prussians: '...We were forced, towards evening, to retreat, which did not take place without disorder. The emperor, behind whom I was ten paces away... had his attention fixed for a moment on this point where he expected to see Marshal Grouchy arrive... The Emperor counted heavily on him, for he frequently looked at his watch...'. Once released from the army, he continued his medical research into venereal diseases, and his Exposé des symptoms de la maladie veneré, des divers méthodes de traitement qui sont applicables à l'école, which he had published in 1804, went to seven further editions. He was named a Chevalier and later Officer of the Legion d'honneur, Napoleon's highest order of merit, in 1808 and a Knight of the Order of Reunion in 1813, both of which awards are included in the collection. For his action during the cholera epidemic of 1832 he received a medal for his services as chief physician of a temporary hospital of the 2nd arrondissement and was awarded the Médaille de Sainte-Hélène, a medal instituted by Napoleon III in 1857 for those who had served his uncle Napoleon I. The collection also includes his portrait, finely painted by French artist Josephine Ternier (née Toulza), who depicts him in uniform wearing both his Legion d'honneur and Ordre de la Réunion.
