Of Mountain rescue and lake district interest An 18ct gold and silver table centrepiece by Ian Atkinson in collaboration with Sidney Beddall, Edinburgh 1986/7 Depicting the Langdale/Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team bringing a stretchered casualty off a rocky crag, mounted on a lapis lazuli panel upon a white onyx base, 16 x 33 x 24cm. Footnotes: The inspiration for this unique piece was the Stone Age axe head (the rocky crag) which was given as a memento, to the lady who commissioned the piece, in recognition for her donation of the Land Rover to the team. This centrepiece originally featured a model of a Land Rover. The Langdale/Ambleside Mountain Rescue Services evolved from earlier local rescue units when they obtained joint premises at Lake Road, Ambleside in 1970. They are a self-funding organisation with a dedicated membership of unpaid volunteers. The team were called out on 105 occasions in 2007.
