A US WWI Sergeant's Military Career Lot in good to very good condition. The surviving military effects of Sergeant Solie G. Carmicheal document a military career that began before America's entry into World War I and continued through the major American campaigns of 1918. The earliest piece is a 1915 National Guard Encampment Medal from Morehead City, North Carolina, where the North Carolina National Guard trained at nearby Camp Glenn, establishing Carmicheal's military service at least two years before the United States entered the war. His World War I Victory Medal bears the clasps Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Defensive Sector, recording extensive service on the Western Front. Carmicheal served during Champagne-Marne, July 15–18, 1918, when American forces helped stop Germany's final major offensive, followed immediately by the Aisne-Marne Offensive, July 18–August 6, when American and French forces counterattacked and forced a German withdrawal. He later participated in the St. Mihiel Offensive, September 12–16, the first major offensive conducted by the American First Army, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, September 26–November 11, the largest American operation of World War I and the final major campaign before the Armistice. His additional Defensive Sector clasp represents qualifying service in a recognized defensive sector. Carmicheal's service continued after the fighting ended on November 11, 1918, as shown by a surviving unit photograph taken at Altenahr, Germany, in 1918–1919 during the American occupation. There is a possible connection to the 42nd “Rainbow” Division, which fought in all four named campaigns represented on his Victory Medal and subsequently entered Germany for occupation duty; elements of the division, including the 166th Infantry, are documented at Altenahr in December 1918. While Carmicheal's exact unit still requires confirmation, his surviving medals and photograph trace his service from the North Carolina National Guard in 1915, through four major campaigns in France in 1918, and finally into occupied Germany in 1918–1919.
